Maria
Sangiolo has been enchanting folk audiences with her warm stage presence
and mellifluous vocals for the past twelve years. Fans have, for a long
time, asked when she was going to record a lullaby CD. With the birth of
her daughter in 1998, Sangiolo penned several children's songs and lullabies
and put together Hello Moon, a recording for the whole
family.

"In a word, 'Wow!' Totally hooked."

Larsen, Utah Public Radio
**** (out of 4 stars)
Here's one that definitely grows on ya. This Boston artist, whose next trip to the midwest early next month takes her to Sioux Falls and St. Paul, was a 1995 performer at the New York Mills Music and Film Festival.
I'm sorry I missed her.
Her soprano voice is compared to Joan Baez's. Forget Baez (well, not really; she's in a class by herself). Sangiolo is making her mark and provides a distinctive clarity that does exceptional justice to some smart lyrics. She's sure to have a major impact on the broadening folk scene.
She's another example of an artist whose calling was so strong that she finally had to quit her day job. Three years later she is catapulting past the rest of the crowd of storytellers. She's up there with Shawn Colvin, Lisa Loeb, Lucy Kaplansky and Patty Larkin.
Her ballads are even stronger than those of her debut album, Eyes of the Heart, which drew raves from The Boston Globe , Billboard and Dirty Linen. Her sidemen on the new CD [ Follow Your Own Road] include John Curtis on guitars and mandolin, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, and there are strong folks on bass, acoustic guitar, piano, drums and vocal harmony.
Her natural vibrato and soulful lyrics are exceptional strengths to caress the human experience and open the hearts of those who hear her words. (12 of the 13) songs on the disc are her own. A favorite: "Fertility" with the refrain, "There is no such thing as fertility forever."
I sure hope they can get her back at New York Mills. I'll not miss her next time.
-- Steve Waller, Features Editor, Brainerd Daily Dispatch, October 10, 1996
On her second CD [Follow Your Own Road], 32 year old Maria Sangiolo sounds sweet to the ears and sincere as can be. In a mini-interview, she said she employed John Curtis of the Pousette-Dart Band to help her with production (which is excellent), but tried to remain true to her own sound: "When I'm touring, it's just me and my guitar." The result is a musically varied, emotionally abundant album about a woman's journey through singlehood to relationship, full of questions and choices. ...
Songs like the title track and "Durango" offer warmth and wisdom - from herself and her grandmother, respectively - and "Moving Train" and "Jesse Runs" provide a strong center. The latter is an intriguing portrait of a guy on the run from failed love, showing Sangiolo can be adept as a third-person storyteller. Augmented instrumentally by co-producer Curtis on guitar and mandolin, guitar meister Jim Henry, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, and the ubiquitous Gideon Freudmann on cello, the artist has assembled a far fuller sound than her live show - but it remains a warm, generous sound. Harmony vocals from Chris Smither and Lynne Saner add to the ease of listening.

Billboard Continental Drift write up (June 1994)
The Boston Globe: Every so often a new voice emerges among Boston singer/songwriters. Maria Sangiolo not only fits that category, but manages to do so without showing off. Of course, that's easy when you've got such a sweet gorgeous voice. Sangiolo exudes both warmth and sensitivity as she soars with a natural vibrato, suggesting a cross between Shawn Colvin and a young Joan Baez.
Dirty Linen: The songs' lyrics are insightful and thought provoking....the melodies are well wed to the feelings of the lyrics and SangioloÕs voice.
Victory Review: The crystalline voice of Maria Sangiolo floats like a dream.
Rock 'N Reel Magazine:Eyes of the Heart cuts through the morass of samples and grunge with a knife-like precision, scoring a home run for the quality of good songs delivered with conviction and power.
St. Paul Pioneer Press: *** (Out of 4) Her voice is clear as crystal, and she offers a deftly delicate guitar style that is more partner than mere accompaniment.

Bob Franke: An impressive debut, marked by an intelligent harmonic sense and an appealing vulnerability.
Victory Review: Sangiolo's voice sends shivers. Sweet and unforced, it delivers personal songs that ever-so-gently touch the heart. She sings of new love, breaking up, young death, healing, childhood. The first cut, "Summer Garden," wins you over with its beautiful picking and lovely vocals...This album's strong point is its spiritual and vulnerable quality throughout.
